Information About Glenmore Eco-Centre

Glenmore eco centre is an environmental education centre operating under the flag of the Gauteng Department of Education. Therefore all staff are qualified teachers with ample experience. The Centre has been involved in environmental education for the last 34 years. Our mission is to promote "sustainable living through environmental education and care" and the program is set to utilize the sea to the maximum.

The Centre has well equipped hostels where the 120 learners and 6 educators from the 6 invited schools are accommodated. The kitchen provides all meals and a tuck-shop is also available.  The Centre is about 300m from a safe swimming beach, the staff members are qualified lifeguards, first aiders as well as boat skippers to maximize the safety of the children. Further more there are two doctors within 10km and a private hospital 25km from the centre.

The centre has a well equipped audio-visual lecture hall as well as amphitheatre, obstacle courses, canoes for water sport, snorkeling equipment and much more.
The Leteria course is specially designed for the identification of leadership qualities and gives ample opportunities for leader development.

For the very first time in our history, the G.D.E. is now making it possible for all Gauteng learners to attend this Environmental Centre. The G.D.E. will subsidize all transport, accommodation and catering expenses. Six schools are selected weekly from a District in such a manner that they represent the cultural diversity of South Africa. They are then invited to visit Glenmore for a 5 day programme

Each school selects 10 boys and 10 girls from their grade 10 group (who are  6 years of age and are well spoken in English). The criteria for selection is academic achievement, environmental involvement, sportsmanship and most of all leadership. They will be accompanied by a dedicated educator from their school to represent the interests of the parents and the school.

The group of 120 learners and 6 educators will participate in a Environmental Education Programme, specialising in the Marine Environment, Experiential Learning, as well as the development of social skills, life skills and leadership.
The programme lays the foundation for responsible citizenship and therefore contributes greatly towards Nation Building and ensuring a brighter and more prosperous future for South Africa and its people.
